Distinct from books on war that tell the story of a particular unit or battle, or a specific weapons system or strategy, a war memoir is a first person, “I was there” account of warfare and combat. ![]() None of which seem to capture the complexities, nuances, horrors, and occasionally humor of those who stand between society and chaos, defending freedom and advancing American foreign policy.įor those more inclined to the written word, there is, of course, the war memoir. Film, television, and video games are how most see war - shown in 60-minute episodes, a two-hour movie, or jingoistic arcade scenes. With an increasingly small segment of the population serving in uniform and, as a result, fewer people exposed to the military via family and friends, there is little understanding and appreciation for what it is like to serve in the armed services - let alone see combat. For most people, at least in the 21st century, the thrills and horrors of war are far-removed and remote.
